Leadership role
Deputy / Associate Director
A deputy, associate or assistant director title filed without a named function; its duties vary by organization.
Reporting and scope
Usually reports to the Executive Director / CEO or to a department head, depending on whether the title is organization-level or sits inside one function. Authority is delegated from that leader and its reach depends on the function, which the title alone does not reveal.
Core responsibilities
- Acts for the leader it supports when that person is absent, within limits the leader or board sets
- Supervises a share of the staff or programs assigned by the leader
- Carries a defined portfolio whose content depends on the function
- May serve as staff liaison to a board committee
- Often named as the successor or interim leader in the organization's succession plan
How it differs
A Deputy / Associate Director with no named function should be matched by level only. When the actual work is clear, a function-specific label such as COO, Director of Programs or Director of Operations is the better match. An organization-wide deputy to the chief executive who runs daily operations is usually closer to COO.
By organization size
In small organizations the title often marks the second-in-command to the Executive Director / CEO across everything. In large organizations it more often marks a level below a department director inside one function.
