Directs the programs and services through which a nonprofit carries out its mission.

Reporting and scope

Reports to the Executive Director / CEO or a Chief Program Officer. Authority covers mission programs across the organization or a major program area.

  • Leads program design, delivery and quality
  • Sets program budgets and manages grant-funded programs
  • Tracks outcomes and reports to funders
  • Supervises program directors and managers
  • Maintains licensing, accreditation or contract standards
  • Works with development on grant proposals and donor reports

How it differs

Chief Program Officer is the C-level program executive; this VP may fill that job under a different title. Director of Programs runs programs at a lower level.
