Leads the systems, infrastructure and support that a nonprofit's staff and programs rely on.

Reporting and scope

Reports to the CIO / CTO, CFO, COO or Executive Director / CEO. Authority covers technology systems and support across the organization.

Core responsibilities

  • Runs IT infrastructure, networks and user support
  • Manages information security and data privacy
  • Oversees key systems such as finance, donor and client or patient records
  • Manages technology budgets and vendor contracts
  • Plans upgrades and replacements
  • Supports program data and reporting required by funders

How it differs

The CIO / CTO sets technology strategy at the C-level; this VP may report to that role or fill it with a VP title. Director of IT runs the function at a lower level. Chief Data Officer focuses on data and analytics.

By organization size

In smaller organizations IT is a director or outsourced service. In larger systems the VP leads infrastructure, applications and security teams.
