Leadership role
Training Director
Plans and runs the training that prepares an organization's staff and volunteers to deliver its programs safely and to standard.
Reporting and scope
Usually reports to the head of HR, programs or operations. Authority covers staff and volunteer training across the organization or within a large program, depending on how learning is structured.
Core responsibilities
- Designs onboarding and ongoing training for staff and volunteers
- Delivers or coordinates training required by funders, licensing bodies or accreditors
- Tracks completion of mandatory training and keeps records for audits
- Develops trainers and supervisors who teach frontline staff
- Manages the training budget and any learning platforms
- In some organizations runs training for clients or outside partners as a mission program
How it differs
The Chief Learning Officer sets learning strategy at the executive level; a Training Director runs the programs. Director of Education usually serves the public or students as part of the mission, while a Training Director mainly serves the workforce. Where training is sold or delivered to outside agencies as a service, check whether the job is really a program role.
By organization size
In small agencies training is a part-time duty of an HR or program manager. In large human services, health or national organizations the Training Director leads a team and may run a certified curriculum across many sites.
