Reports to the Director of Operations, COO or a program director. Authority covers a site, service line or operating function.

  • Manages logistics, inventory, fleet or facilities for the unit
  • Tracks performance data and service levels
  • Supervises frontline staff and supervisors
  • Carries out policies, safety rules and funder or licensing requirements
  • Helps prepare and monitor the unit budget

How it differs

The Director of Operations leads operations for the organization or a large division. The Office Manager focuses on office administration. A Program Manager oversees program design and results rather than logistics.

In small organizations the role may be the senior operations position. In large food banks, health systems and service agencies there are several operations managers under a director.
