Executive Producer

Plans and directs the production of an organization's performances, events or media.

Reporting and scope

Reports to the Artistic Director, Executive Director / CEO or a head of content. Authority covers a season, series or slate of productions and their budgets.

Core responsibilities

  • Selects and develops productions or media projects with artistic leadership
  • Builds production budgets and schedules and keeps them on track
  • Hires and manages directors, designers, crews and freelancers
  • Secures rights, licenses, union agreements and co-production deals
  • Works with development staff on underwriting and sponsor credits
  • Delivers projects to broadcast, streaming or stage on deadline

How it differs

The Artistic Director sets artistic vision, while the Executive Producer turns it into funded, scheduled productions. The General Manager handles business operations of a performing arts organization. The Music Director leads musical programming and performances.

By organization size

At a small theater or festival the role may produce every show hands-on. At public media stations and large presenting organizations it oversees several producers and a large production budget.
