Leadership role

Division Director

Directs a division of an organization, in whatever function that division serves.

Reporting and scope

Reports to a senior executive such as a Vice President, the COO or the Executive Director / CEO. Authority covers one division; what that division does depends on the organization.

Core responsibilities

  • Directs the staff and managers of the division
  • Owns the division's budget and results
  • Sets division goals within the organization's strategic plan
  • Reports division performance to senior leadership
  • Represents the division with other departments and outside partners

How it differs

The label shows level and span, not function. Where the division's function is known, match to the functional director role (for example Director of Programs or Director of Finance). A Regional Director leads a geography rather than a functional division.

By organization size

Larger organizations give division directors bigger staffs and budgets and sometimes a vice president title. In small organizations the label is uncommon.

Filings from the last five years mapped to this role commonly report titles such as: Division Director; Lower Division Director; Upper Division Director; Upper School Division Director
