Leadership role
Director of Volunteer Services
Recruits, trains and coordinates an organization's volunteers.
Reporting and scope
Reports to the Director of Operations, Director of Programs or Director of Development depending on where volunteers are deployed. Authority covers the volunteer program across the organization or a campus.
Core responsibilities
- Designs volunteer roles with program managers and sets screening standards
- Runs recruitment, background checks, orientation and training
- Tracks hours and service value for grant reports and the annual report
- Manages risk, including youth protection, confidentiality and insurance
- Recognizes and retains long-term volunteers and volunteer leaders
- Coordinates corporate and group volunteer days with the development team
How it differs
The Director of Outreach and Director of Community Relations build external relationships but do not manage a volunteer workforce. Board recruitment is usually handled by the Executive Director / CEO, not this role.
By organization size
In small organizations the role is often part-time or combined with events or outreach. Hospitals, food banks and large human service agencies may have a team of coordinators under it.
