Directs programs that measure and improve the quality of an organization's services or products.

Reporting and scope

Typically reports to the Chief Quality Officer, COO or Medical Director / CMO. Authority covers quality measurement, improvement projects and accreditation readiness.

  • Runs quality measurement and improvement projects
  • Prepares for accreditation and licensing surveys
  • Tracks and investigates adverse events and complaints
  • Reports quality data to leadership and the board's quality committee
  • Trains staff on quality improvement methods

How it differs

Chief Quality Officer and VP of Quality are the executive tiers above. Director of Compliance focuses on legal and regulatory conformance. Director of Quality focuses on outcomes, safety and improvement.

In small agencies quality is often a part-time duty of a program director. Hospitals and health systems have dedicated quality departments with analysts and patient safety staff.
